The Story
The Acatenango region is home to active volcanos Fuego and Acatenango, which both host a variety of microclimates. The ecosystems span across farmlands, tropical forests, high alpine forests, and volcanic terrain. Coffee at lower altitudes grows faster, whereas at higher altitudes coffee plants have to work harder to grow, thereby producing more complex acids within the coffee fruit. The microclimate of a region where a particular coffee is grown impacts the flavor of that coffee significantly.
Tehuya farms have some of the most fertile volcanic soil in Guatemala due to the release of plant nutrients, from the surrounding flora. Lava coffee is grown under dense shade as high as 5250 feet (1600 meters), creating a forest that is an ecological gift. Constant eruptions from the nearby Fuego volcano keep the coarse, sandy soils full of minerals. Temperate gusts from the Pacific Ocean and marked seasons allow coffee to be sun-dried. Lava coffee is a product of both the geography and quality-focused practices at Tehuya, producing a unique flavor that melts mountains.
